Visiting Leyte?

You have to stop by Lake Danao Natural Park.

Let me tell you this.

Lake Danao is a special place to me.

I remember visiting it with my family when I was a little girl, back when we lived in Ormoc.

In my memories, I see the wind-rippled surface of the blue-gray water, feel the cold as I plunge into it, and hear the songs of birds in the distance.

Know what?

Nothing much has changed.

Yes, even in 2026.

It’s still the same pristine, peaceful, beautiful lake it used to be 25 years ago.

So if you’re in Ormoc City or anywhere in the area, you HAVE to visit the lake.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to get there, what to expect, fun things you can do there, and more.

Let’s get started!

Lake Danao Fun Facts: 3 Things You Should Know about this Mysterious, Beautiful Lake

First things first!

Here are 3 fun facts to jot down in your notes before you visit Lake Danao.

Lake Danao Fun Fact #1: Nobody Knows How Deep the Lake Actually Is

On average, Lake Danao is 80 meters (260 feet) deep.

Near the shorelines, it gets shallow, ranging from 4-6 meters deep.

But nobody has explored the whole lake, including its deepest areas.

Throughout the years, teams of scuba divers have descended into its depths to try to measure it.

However, the uneven, sloping nature of the underwater terrain makes it difficult to measure all the spots.

So even though the lake’s depth is an average of 80 meters, nobody truly knows how deep its deepest point goes.

Which brings us to…

Lake Danao Fun Fact #2: Lake Danao Is Surrounded in Mystery and Full of Legends

Throughout the years, we’ve heard some strange stories about Lake Danao.

One is that scuba divers ventured below and found the bottom of the lake populated with huge, strange trees they’d never seen before.

Another is that local guides have spotted a Loch Ness-like monster breaching the surface of the lake (on more than one occasion).

Another is that giant eels have been seen slithering beneath the surface, bigger than any eel ever seen by the human eye.

Are these true?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

That’s why they’re legends.

But if this is starting to give you goosebumps and you rethink visiting the lake…

…don’t!

Don’t worry.

I’ve been to the lake countless times, and it has always been peaceful, fun, and creature-free.

Still, it’s nice to know the legends as you paddle around in your kayak or lie on your back on the water.

That extra thrill and those goosebumps are part of the adventure.

Lake Danao Fun Fact #3: Lake Danao Is Huge (But the Park is Even Bigger)

Yes, the lake is the main attraction of Lake Danao Natural Park.

And yes, the lake is HUGE, covering 143 hectares (370 acres).

But the Natural park surrounding it is even bigger.

It covers 2,193 hectares (5,420 acres) and includes the Amandiwin mountain range.

If you have a lot of time, you can explore not only the lake, but also the footpaths that wind through the forests.

The area is stunning, filled with native trees like Narra (the Philippines’ National tree), Abaca, and Coconut.

Shrubs and flowers also grow abundantly, and the place is full of birds and other rainforest creatures.

If you are a big nature-lover like me, you’re in for a real treat.

Lake Danao Natural Park: 5 Fun-Filled Things to Do There

So, I’ve convinced you (with my legends and 5-star rating) to visit Lake Danao.

Hooray!

What activities can you do in the Natural park?

Here are 5 I’m sure you’ll love.

Lake Danao Activity #1: Rent a Floating Cottage

Hanging out in a floating cottage in the middle of Lake Danao is one of the best things to do there.

If you only do one thing, make sure it’s this.

Here’s how it works:

You rent a floating cottage, which is made of wood and thatching, furnished with a table and two long benches on either side.

Like this:

Once you step onto it, a guide will pull the floating cottage out into the lake using a system of ropes connecting the shore with a line of buoys out in the deep area.

The guide braces himself and starts to haul at the rope, with strength but slowly, so the craft moves gently away from its shore mooring.

You feel the bamboo floor shivering and moving under your feet.

The shore grows distant, and you are surrounded on all sides by water so still it looks like a mirror.

You hear nothing but the sound of birds in the faraway trees, so faint it’s only like echoes.

Once the cottage is floating gently within the lake, the guide leaves.

You can stay out there as long as you like – simply signal to the guide to take you back once you want to return to shore.

Lake Danao Activity #2: Kayaking

Want to experience the lake without getting wet?

Rent a kayak and venture out into the deep!

Kayaks are available for PHP250 an hour, and you can enjoy paddling out to the distant shores alone or with a companion.

The picture above shows my parents enjoying the activity, meaning it’s fun for people of all ages.

If you want to step away from the bustle of the floating cottage (it can get hectic if you’ve come with a bunch of people)…

…you’ll love the serenity and silence of going off by yourself on a kayak.

The exercise and sunlight are also a plus!

Lake Danao Activity #3: Eating, Eating, Eating!

YES, an outing is never fun without…

…FOOD!

At least for us Filipinos.

I don’t know about you. 🤭

Anyway, if you’re the type of person who loves eating while on a trip, you don’t need to worry that Lake Danao is too isolated for some good food.

Right before you venture out into the lake on the floating cottage, the attendant will ask you if you want to order anything.

She’ll give you a few laminated sheets of paper on which the menu is printed.

The food is affordable and delicious, and you can order anything from light salads to full meals (chicken, seafood, fried noodles).

For a better idea, here’s what we ordered for 7 people:

  • Native chicken adobo whole. (Adobong Manok Bisaya) PHP700
  • Pansit Bam-I (stir-fried noodles). PHP 450
  • Breaded, fried oysters. (Tab Breaded) (2 orders, PHP150 each)
  • Fresh oyster salad. (Tab Kinilaw) PHP 130
  • 1 platter of rice. PHP120

We all ate until we were stuffed, and there was food left over afterwards.

Here’s their whole menu:

Also, there’s a cooler and a wide selection of snacks on a table at the entrance to the lake.

We opted to bring our own snacks and drinks, but if you’d rather not carry bags of goodies on the trip…

…you’ll love the option of buying the bags of chips and soft drinks right there at the park.

Lake Danao Activity #4: Swimming

For those who love the water, good news!

Lake Danao isn’t only about rafting and kayaking…

…it’s about swimming too.

Just check out that row of life vests in the photo, all at the ready for those who want to experience the cool pleasure of the lake’s waters.

And let me tell you this.

The waters are COOL!

In a lovely way, of course.

If you’re feeling prickly and sweaty after the hike down to the lake…

…if the bright, strong Filipino sunshine is too strong for you…

…you’ll love the soothing, cool embrace of the lake’s waters when you step into them.

Note: Wearing life jackets while swimming is a rule there.

There have been way too many accidents for the guides to take any risks.

Still, I don’t think it takes away from the experience.

So, grab a lifejacket (which is free, by the way), stand at the edge of the floating cottage, and jump!

The dense green water will pull you down, and then you’ll kick and rise to the surface, fresh and cool and absolutely happy.

Lake Danao Activity #5: Exploring the Lush Rainforest Paths

If you’re a person who loves nature, you won’t be satisfied with only visiting the lake.

You’ll want a taste of the forest, too.

Its winding paths surrounded by lush trees.

Its colorful flora and fauna.

The silence and peace of nature.

Just look at all that beauty and imagine yourself there, embraced by the forest.

And these cool buildings, which are perfect for photos.

So, here’s my suggestion.

Set aside an entire day to visit Lake Danao Natural Park.

Go swimming, kayaking, and rafting at the lake…

…then spend an hour or two walking down the forest trails.

We were there for only 3 hours (we had a boat to catch), and I wished we could have stayed longer!

How to Get to Lake Danao: It’s Super Easy and Affordable!

So, you’re in Ormoc City.

If you’ve just arrived in Leyte, I’m guessing you’re there.

Just fresh from the boat, hyped and ready to start your adventure.

And guess what?

Getting to Lake Danao Natural Park from Ormoc City is easier than you think.

Here are 2 ways:

  • Hire a car or van. This is what we did. We were a group of 7 people, so we hired a van with a driver to take us around the city and the surrounding areas for the entire day. The cost was PHP3,500 for 24 hours.
  • Take a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi). If you’re on your own or with only one or two companions and you think renting a car is too expensive…this option is for you. You can hire a habal-habal driver for PHP500 per head to take you to the lake. The driver will wait for you as you enjoy your time there, then take you back to the city afterwards. (Tip: If you stay long and eat lunch at the lake, I recommend buying your driver some lunch too).

Either way, the trip from Ormoc City to Lake Danao Natural Park will take only 30-45 minutes (depending on how fast your driver is).

There is minimal to no traffic, and you can sit back while enjoying the scenic views that go past your window.

Mountains, valleys, trees, little villages…this trip is an adventure in itself!

How Much Will You Spend in Lake Danao Natural Park?

No matter what your budget is, you can visit Lake Danao Natural Park and enjoy it in your own way.

Just choose the activities that fit in that budget, and voila!

A day well spent.

Here’s a pricing list for your reference:

ItemPrice
Entrance FeePHP 50 per person (FREE for kids below 10 years old and seniors above 60 years old)
Floating CottagePHP 450 for the first hour; PHP 250 for succeeding hours
KayakPHP 250 per head
FoodIt depends! See the menu photos above.
Forest TrailsFREE

As you can see, the activities are really affordable.

It gets even cheaper if you’re a big group, as floating cottages can carry approximately 15 people.

How Much Time Do You Need to Enjoy Lake Danao Natural Park?

Honestly, you don’t need an entire day to enjoy Lake Danao. (Although you should stay that long, if you can.)

When we were there last, we only stayed 3 hours.

It was a little too short (in my opinion), but it was still enough for some swimming, kayaking, and lunch.

We had a boat to catch, so we couldn’t stay longer.

Unfortunately.

So if you want to make the most out of the place, I suggest setting aside a whole day for it.

(You don’t HAVE to, but if you can, DO IT!)

This will allow you not only to enjoy the lake itself (spending time on the floating cottage and enjoying the water activities)…

…but also explore the forest trails and natural scenery out of the water.

If you’re really short on time, I suggest setting aside at least 3 hours.

Of course, this doesn’t include travel, which is 30-45 minutes each way.

So…

  • 4 hours. If you want a quick visit and don’t have much time to spare.
  • 8 hours. If you want to luxuriate in the beauty of the park and take your time enjoying it.

The park is open from 8 AM to 4:45 PM.

Can You Sleep at Lake Danao Natural Park?

For now, no.

The natural park is open only for day-trips.

However, as of the last time we visited, a lodge was being prepared for guests.

So, check back soon!

Lake Danao Natural Park: Your Next Destination?

Craving the silence and peace of a lake?

Tired of the bustling city, the heat, the endless crowds?

You should give Lake Danao a visit.

I mean, if you’re already in Ormoc City, this is a MUST.

It’s a quick day-trip getaway, a lush, beautiful forest with a lovely guitar-shaped lake.

So, go on.

Set aside half a day or an entire day, hop on a motorcycle taxi, and enjoy!

You won’t regret it.
