The Problem

The Problem with Travelling in the Philippines

I’m in Camiguin, and I want to get to Siargao. But there are no direct flights or boats between the two islands. What do I do?
I’ve always dreamed of visiting Tablas Island. You’ve heard it has a tiny airport. But is it still running? How do I get tickets? The information online is so old - can I trust it?
I’m going to Dinagat Islands. Are there decent places to stay there?
Am I staying too long in this town? Is it time to move to the next one?
How can I get to Siquijor from Cebu City? Do I need to book a boat ticket in advance?
I am going on a 2-week trip to the Philippines. I have no idea what to do, what to see, and how to get around!
OMG…missed the boat again!
How much will hiring a private driver be?

And on and on.

I’ve heard questions like these again and again because…

…you got it.

Travelling in the Philippines is HARD.

I once listened and nodded as a German friend told me, “You know, travel in the Philippines is SO difficult. When I was in Thailand, it really wasn’t that hard.”

And I get it.

  • 7, 641 islands (which ones are worth visiting?)
  • Mind-boggling, unreliable transportation (buses, vans, and jeepneys change schedules and stations all the time, and updated information is seldom available)
  • The confusion between spending too long and too short in one place (should I spend 2 days in Bohol? 3 days in Cebu? 1 in Siquijor? Is it enough? Is it too much?)
  • Beautiful but inaccessible places. Romblon? Tablas? Dinagat? Samal? Malapascua? These islands are some of the best in the Philippines, but guess what? There are no direct flights and ferries there from the big cities.
  • Travel time between islands. You can’t hop on a bus and go anywhere you want. Moving requires planning. Booking plane or boat tickets. Having in-between days. It’s not that easy.
  • Outdated information (ChatGPT what?)
  • Overpriced private transportation (being charged 10x what it really costs to get to your destination)

What if…there was a way to make it all super simple?

Nightmare vs. Dream
Same trip, two very different stories

Travel in the Philippines: The Nightmare vs. The Dream

Your trip to the Philippines can be a nightmare…or a dream.

Like this:

Nightmare

Finally, you’re going to climb the famous Mt. Talinis. You’re in Cebu City, and you take public transportation to Dumaguete. Google Maps says you’ll get there in 4 hours, but guess what? There’s an accident in Carcar City. You arrive at the port after 9 hours of gruelling travel. You’re exhausted, and the meetup for the climb is at 4am (only 5 hours from now, and you haven’t even checked into your hotel!). Already, you feel your stomach lurch as you anticipate climbing your dream mountain sleepless and exhausted.

Dream

You know traffic is unpredictable on small southbound Cebu roads, so you decide to travel to Dumaguete a day early. You check into your hotel and relax by the pool. You get a good night’s sleep. The next day, you enjoy some downtime and get a soothing massage. Your body is starting to feel rested. You’re super ready for a 4am call time tomorrow.

Nightmare

ChatGPT told you there’s a boat trip from Oslob straight to Panglao, but here you are at the port, and they’re telling you there’s no such thing! You scratch your head. Your stomach growls. Your backpack cuts your back. You are sweating. What do you do next? Rebook your hotel as you figure out what to do? Find somewhere else to go? But where?

Dream

You skip through the wrong information online, faintly smirking, because you know exactly how to get to Panglao. You visit a credible ticket booking site and purchase a ticket from Cebu City to Panglao. You take the 4-hour bus to Cebu, giving yourself extra time for the traffic. It’s super easy because you know the right information - in fact, you feel just like a local.

Nightmare

You missed the boat. AGAIN. What time is the next trip? Why didn’t ChatGPT give you the correct information? Do you still have time to visit Camiguin, or should you cancel that destination from your itinerary altogether?

Dream

You arrive at the port on time. The queue hasn’t yet formed outside the boarding gates. You still have time for a hot dog sandwich and a paper cup of cold sugarcane juice. You stretch your legs and relax as you wait to board, already daydreaming about your visit to Bohol.

Nightmare

You drive 2 hours on your rented motorcycle to see the giant clam sanctuary you’ve been dying to see since you watched videos of snorkelers swimming against their gorgeous violet shells. But when you arrive…it’s closed! The caretaker looks at you with pity and a little condescension. “Didn’t you know? This place has been closed for 2 weeks.” Eye roll. “Politics.” Now you’re crestfallen. All that’s left is to drive 2 hours back to your bnb to figure out what to do next. There’s nothing else remotely close to you, and you sigh as you make your way back to the motorcycle in the burning late morning heat.

Dream

You’ve always wanted to visit the giant clam sanctuary, but now you know it’s been closed for 2 weeks because of politics. So instead, you plan a trip to Mantigue Island. You never even knew it existed. But wow, is it worth it! Giant fan corals. Green turtles bigger than your entire torso. Bright clownfish gazing at you from the safety of their dancing anemone. Who could have guessed? It’s even better than the footage of the giant clam sanctuary you saw online!

Nightmare

You’re in Siquijor. You’ve just arrived. And wow, the place is magical. But you only have one day to explore. ONE DAY. You didn’t expect the trip to be so long. 2 hours to Bohol, an almost-one-hour stopover, then 3 hours to Siquijor. You’ve only allotted 3 days to this magical place, and you already have a return ticket. You won’t be able to see anything much. How you wish you’d known how long the trip would take! Then maybe you’d have given this place 5 days…

Dream

You know just how long it will take you to travel to Siquijor. So you give 5 days to the island. 2 for travelling back and forth, 3 dedicated to exploring. And wow, it’s so worth it. You visit the magical, turquoise waterfalls. You swim in the emerald sea. You take a freediving class. You never feel rushed or stressed out. This is a trip you will remember your whole life.

If only.

If only the Philippines was easy to travel in.

If only you could experience only the dream, never the nightmare.

Well, guess what?

Now you can.

How I Help
The Itinerary Checker

Itinerary Checker: I Check or Plan Your Itinerary for You

Here’s the deal.

I can help you plan your Philippines trip.

I’m a travel blogger with a goal to visit all 82 provinces of the Philippines (more on this later). So yes, I’ve been around.

And each time I post stuff on social media, people ask me all sorts of questions.

What bus to ride to Mt. Batulao’s jump off?
Do I have to book my Siquijor tickets online?
How long should I stay in Masbate?

I make sure to answer them in detail.

And then I thought, why not do this for YOU?

So that you no longer have to experience nightmare travel in the Philippines.

So that every day you spend here is a dream.

Smooth travels
Confidence
Knowing what to expect
Getting on and off buses like you’re a local who knows exactly what you’re doing
Not getting ripped off by that tricycle driver who charges you 5x what it normally costs to take you to your destination
Spending just the right time in every place you visit

You want all that.

And I can help.

Here’s what I can give you:

Up-to-date info (so you never again roll your eyes at another ChatGPT mistake)
Official websites and social media pages where you can monitor schedules and announcements
Bus and jeepney routes you can DIY (so you won’t spend 10x on hiring a private driver)
Pricing estimates (so you never again get scammed into paying 5x what transportation really costs)
Lists of good places to stay (these can be hard to find online for some places!)
People to contact (so you feel confident the moment you step down from the plane or ferry)
Where to find weather updates and trip cancellation warnings
Hidden gems you didn't know existed (I mean, you don’t want to do only common, “touristic” things, right?)
Advice on how long to stay in places, what transportation to take, and what to expect on the trip
And more!

I can help you make your whole trip feel like a dream come true.

About Me
Hey there, I’m Manoling!
Manoling portrait photo

Flashback to when I was 7 years old.

Picture me - scrawny, wide-eyed, tiny (I was small for my age).

The youngest of 5 siblings who were somehow nonchalant about this trip we were taking to Olango Island.

While here I am, crazy with excitement.

Noting all the details.

The drive to Mactan Island. The 30-minute banka ride which cost PHP90 per person. The vendor selling buko for 20 apiece.

Details, details, details.

That was my very first trip out of the island I was born in, and I remember every single detail of it.

And when I grew up and fell hard for travel…I didn’t change.

Each time I visit a new province (I’ve visited almost 60 of the Philippines’ 82 provinces), I take notes.

How much the ferry costs. The places to eat. Where to book island hopping tours. How to get to isolated islands with no direct flights and ferries. How much I spend. And so on.

Provinces visited60 / 82

Here are some of the top destinations I’ve had first-hand experience visiting:

The thing is, I love travelling to lesser-known spots.

Gems that the crowd of tourists haven’t yet discovered.

But I’ll never skip a classic like Boracay or Bohol either.

I travel everywhere, anywhere, and nowhere is too crowded, too isolated, too unknown, too “touristy” for me.

And yes.

I’ve walked within the bright, bustling hubbab of Panglao.

I’ve journeyed to Dinagat, where the only place open at 8 PM is a “silogan” called Twindales.

I’ve discovered a unique freediving community in Bagalangit, a secret surf spot that’s not Siargao, and the best mountains to summit (even unknown ones).

What does all this tell you?

Well…I’m the one to ask for help when planning your trip.

Right?

I love doing stuff like this.

And I can’t wait.
